Laney Law Society
Article I
Name & Address
§ 1. This student club shall be known as the Laney Law Society (LLS):
§ 2. The address of this club for official business purposes shall be at Laney College student center:
Article II
Purpose
The purpose of LLS shall be to utilize, develop, and support the collective resources of its members to:
a. Provide current Laney College students intending to go to Law School with enough resources that nurtures their passion to pursue a legal profession so that members can have a glimpse of what the academic and professional future looks like.
b. Identify and promote the academic and professional needs and goals of its members;
c. Foster and encourage members interest in going to law school;
d. Develop understanding on legal profession and create relationships between future Law School students and current practicing attorneys within the legal community;
Article III
Membership Classifications
§ 1. Membership and application is open and free to any Laney College students with an interest in going to Law School:
§ 2. Members shall be classified as active and inactive as defined below:
a. Only currently registered students for the semester may be considered active members of the LLS student club. Only active members may vote or hold office.
b. Inactive membership shall consist of any member who is not currently a registered student in Laney college for the semester.
§ 3. Only active members shall have the right to vote, hold office, or represent the club in any capacity. Inactive members may participate as non-voting members in all other activities of this club.
§ 4. All active members are required to regularly participate in LLS meetings and activities and fulfill their dues obligations.
§6. LLS will not restrict membership based upon race, color, national origin, religion, sex, gender identity, pregnancy (including pregnancy, childbirth, and medical conditions related to pregnancy or childbirth), physical or mental disability, medical condition (cancer related or genetic characteristics), ancestry, marital status, age, sexual orientation, citizenship, or service in the uniformed services (including membership, application for membership, performance of service, application for service, or obligation for service in the uniformed services.)
Article IV
Officers
§ 1. Persons eligible to hold an Executive Board Office must be an active member of LLS for the entire semester preceding their elected term in office.
§ 2. The officers of LLS shall be

2. Vice President,
3. Finance (Treasurer)
§ 3. The committee chairpersons of LLS shall be
1. Academic Affairs,
2. Recruitment and membership Affairs,
3. Social media Affairs.
§ 4. The officers shall be elected individually by majority vote of the eligible active members, voting in a valid election in accordance with Article IX of this constitution.
§ 5. The committee chairpersons can be elected, appointed, nominated, volunteered and so on, from any eligible active members.
§ 6. The officers and Chairpersons shall hold office for a term of one semester. A new term of office shall start no later than the second week of the beginning of school in each academic semester. The previous term of office terminates at the same week the new term starts, subject to the provision of this constitution.
§ 7. At the end of each officer’s term, each officer shall organize a transition meeting with their successor at which time they shall transfer all documents and records related to that position from the previous academic semester. This shall occur no later than the start of the successor’s term.
Article V
Executive Board
Both the officers and the committee chairpersons of the club shall be designated as the “executive board (the Board)”
§ 1. The Board shall have general power to administer all meetings, elections, programs, events and activities governing the club.
§ 2. Any decision of the Board shall be made at a duly called meeting of the Board at which there are all four officers and at least the quorum of half of the committee chairpersons present.
§ 3. Pursuant to Article X of this constitution, the Board is empowered to discipline any officer or committee Chairpersons or member who fails to properly discharge his or her duties to the club.
Article VI
Committees
§ 1. The standing committees of the Club shall be
1. Academic Affairs,
2. Recruitment and membership Affairs,
3. Social media Affairs.
Such other special Committees shall be appointed by the Board pursuant to Article V of this Constitution. The Board may delegate appointment power to the President as necessary to facilitate the club and operation of a committee.
a. Committee members shall be comprised of active members of LLS. Each committee shall be staffed by at least one active member or more including the chairpersons of said committee.
Article VII
Meetings
§ 1. The frequency of board meetings will be determined by the Board at or before the beginning of the academic semester, provided, however that there shall be no fewer than four board meetings per semester.
a. Time and location of board meetings can be agreed upon by the Board at the beginning of each semester.
b. Procedures for running the meetings of the Board shall be agreed upon at the beginning of the academic semester and adhered to thereafter.
c. The President shall take reports of the activities of the standing committees and of any special committees then in existence.
d. Each officer and committee chairpersons shall have one vote on matters within the Boards’ discretion under this constitution. Such votes must be made in accordance with Article V. § 2.
e. Any members wishing to attend a Board meeting may do so at the discretion of the Board.
f. The president is empowered to call special meetings of the Board within his or her discretion.
§ 2. The first general meeting of the academic semester shall be held during the first three full weeks of the first semester.
a. The time and estimate frequency of general body meetings shall be once a month.
b. General meetings shall be conducted in accordance with the applicable provisions of this Constitution.
Article VIII
Financial Matters
§ 1. A financial report of LLS’s shall be made by the Treasurer to the membership after every financial activity.
§ 3. The President and Treasurer shall serve as authorized signatories for any monetary transactions.
§ 4. As part of its official duties, before the end of its term of office, the Treasurer must conduct a semester audit report of LLS’s overall financial activities.
§ 5. As part of his or her duties, each officer with an authorized signature must, at the end of his or her term, take all steps and cooperation possible to willingly help the incoming board for the next term.
Article IX
Voting
§ 1. Each active member shall have one vote for Board election.
§2. Election procedures for all Board positions shall also be determined by the Board no later than two weeks before they commence. Elections shall be held no later than the second week of school each semester.
Article X
Constitutional Amendments and Adoptions
§ 1. The Constitution of this club shall be adopted by a simple majority vote of the membership.
§ 2. Additions to and repeals of any part of this Constitution may be proposed for consideration by a two-thirds vote of the active membership. In the event of an affirmative consideration, additions to or repeals of any portion of this Constitution may be made by a two-thirds vote of the active membership, except, where the proposal is to repeal this entire Constitution, the votes needed respectively consider and pass such a repeal shall be three-fourths of the active membership.
§ 3. The Constitution of LLS, or any amendment thereto or repeal thereof, shall be effective immediately upon proper adoption or ratification by the active membership and the affixing of the signature of the President and Vice President.
Article XI
Dissolution
Dissolution can be proposed by a motion from any active board member. The vote count shall be three-fourths of the active membership to dissolve the group.
